I currently collect Space Marines and have a solid 1000 army. Currently, I have Devastator Squads for the Heavy Support choice but would like to change it up a bit. I have 20 Terminators in my army and would like a good heavy support choice that runs parallel with them. I am considering the Thunderfire Cannon, Whirlwind, Predator Destructor and the Land Raider Redeemer but cannot decide which one to choose. Any suggestions? What Warhammer 40,000 Space Marine Heavy Support choice should I select?
How in heaven's name do you get 20 terminators in a 1000 point army? Not that it isn't possible it just... doesn't leave much tactical flexibility in the new edition, what with needing Troops choices to claim objectives. Still...
...looking past that interesting piece of trivia, the obvious "support" choice for a Terminator-heavy army is a Land Raider or variant taken as a transport. However, this does mean not deploying your Terminators by teleport, which rather detracts from one of their most tactically-useful qualities: the ability to cover a great deal of ground in their initial move.
I'd personally recommend either a Vindicator or Whirlwind. The new "direct fire" rules for the Whirlwind make it a good deal more useful in open terrain than it used to be. Plus, the new template rules mean that these weapons will always hit *something*, whereas the Predator still runs a one-in-three risk of hitting nothing at all with each shot.
Vindicators, in my experience, are awesome (and I speak as one who has been their victim on a regular basis). Whirlwinds have the advantage of range and indirect fire, but nothing says "welcome to the battlefield" to that annoying squad of Swooping Hawks or deep-striking Chaos Terminators than a S10 AP2 ordnance blast template. What Warhammer 40,000 Space Marine Heavy Support choice should I select?
as a 40k veteran, i can tell you that out of them all he most tactically flexible, if not the most enduring, is the whirlwind MML (multiple missile launcher). Against ene,ys like tryanids and orks, the amount of bodys pressing forward is gonna make a castellan missile very useful. cityfight is their natural home however, the incendiary castellan is geat for killing enemys in cover, and because its indirect, it has point killing ability anywhere on the battlefeild, very useful.
Vengence misiles dont have alot of power in terms of their role as artillery, and while they can still churn up light infantry (gaurd and orks, eldar and tryranids) with relative easy, you dont have to be woried about firing on your terminators.
To compliment your terminators however, i would lean to the new land raider, acting as a transport for them, clearing the path with the heavy flamer sponsons and getting to where you need them.
However to compliment your terminatorsWhat Warhammer 40,000 Space Marine Heavy Support choice should I select?
I would go with a vindicator or a devestator squad with plasma cannons that you can break down into combat squads. Even with the new template rules in 5th a whirlwind isn't that great agasint MEQ's. Vindicator is and you can run it anti-tank in a pinch. Vindicator works better for most of the missions- place a loot counter out in the open and then place the vindicator in range of that- instant kills zone with no cover saves, etc.
I say land raider ,its one of the best transport units in the game.
