Well for a start, other than the standard Ork special rules about mob checks, Nobs and Boyz don't have any other abilities beyond their weapons and stat line.

The Waaagh! is an ability that can be used once per battle. When the Warboss declares a Waaagh! all Ork units may move an additional D6" in the movement phase (and may still run or assault, but not both) and gain +1 Strength in the Assault phase. If you time a Waaagh! just right it can win the battle for you.

Space Marine captains have the "Combat Tactics" special rule. This allows any Space Marine unit that must take a morale test to choose to fail it. This may not seem terribly useful (and isn't anything like as useful as the old "Rites of Command" special rule) but it essentially gives marines who are losing a combat the chance to break away and then either run away (sorry, "perform a tactical withdrawal") or charge back in (with that vital extra +1 attack) in their next turn. Of course, you still have to make your roll to break away and you run the risk of your withdrawing space marines being caught in a sweeping advance, but them's the breaks.

You really should buy the codex ASAP, though. Generally speaking, stores, clubs and certainly tournaments won't let you play unless you have the relevant codex. How do you use some of the ork's and space marine's abilities in warhammer 40k?
